Beneficial Health Medical Center

Why do you have shoulder pain?

There are a number of potential causes of shoulder pain. It can happen suddenly in an accident or develop gradually over a long period of time. No matter how the shoulder pain occurs, it can interfere with normal shoulder and arm function. Some of the reasons for shoulder pain include:

  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Shoulder dislocation

Any shoulder pain, regardless of cause, should be promptly evaluated and treated. Dr. William Knop and the team at Beneficial Health Medical Center are here to help with shoulder pain.

How is a shoulder exam performed?

Dr. Knop and the team at Beneficial Health Medical Center will examine your shoulder to determine the origin of the pain and/or diagnosis. X-ray images are also an important part of most shoulder pain exams. The X-ray images reveal more details about the structure of the shoulder and show problems close up. This information will allow our team to recommend a customized treatment plan to relieve your shoulder pain.

What is the treatment for shoulder pain?

At Beneficial Health Medical Center, shoulder pain is treatment will vary depending on the cause of the pain and on the symptoms you're having. Dr. Knop can perform gentle chiropractic adjustments that can correct a shoulder dislocation problem. If the shoulder pain occurs due to joint problems and you're suffering from osteoarthritis, joint injections may be another part of your treatment.

Joint injections typically consist of using an ultra thin needle that can alleviate swelling, which in turn will relieve problems like stiffness and pain. There are also other types of shoulder injections designed to increase the lubrication around the joint, thus allowing it to move freely without pain.

On site physical therapy and rehabilitation services may also be utilized in correcting your shoulder problem.

Physiotherapy may also be useful for patients suffering from shoulder pain. Some of the options for physiotherapy include:

  • Moist heat therapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Ultrasound treatments
  • Interferential electrical muscle stimulation
  • Cold-laser therapy

As your shoulder starts to heal, you may find massage therapy to be beneficial. Regular massage therapy can provide both pain relief and improved range of motion.
